As TFT hits 5 years old, we’re starting to have a solid backlog of great designed spells, and some champs have been explored pretty thoroughly.
Let’s take Ashe for instance. We’ve done versions of her Q (Ranger’s Focus), her W (Volley), and her R (Enchanted Crystal Arrow). Each of these has even had unique spins on it (like the current Ashe being a pretty interpretive version of the Q). Her E is a pretty lousy TFT spell. So I guess that means we’re out of ideas right?
Obviously not. What’s so cool about TFT is that other inputs can alter the feeling of a spell that has been done before. Different Origins and Classes can make a spell feel completely different in the right set. There’s also cost. A 1 cost that uses Volley will feel very different than a 4 or 5 cost that uses Volley. And even if none of that works out, the occasional reprint of a solid spell isn’t the worst thing as long as a set doesn’t include too many of them, since the traits and champs they would be used with would also be different.
I know I use this word a lot, but the sheer about of combinatorics possible is what makes both playing and working on TFT so exciting. We’ve done a lot for sure, but there’s still so much room to explore, and do wild and creative things with the various League champs, even one’s we’ve already explored a lot like Ashe. I wonder what version of Ashe will show up next…
That’s it for today. My long time engineering buddy from Nintendo happens to be in town today, so I get to have lunch with him. It’s been a few years, so kinda looking forward to that! Otherwise, lots to do every day. Have a great day, and take it easy 🙂
