Live service games can change a lot over the years, making it hard to come back to them after taking a break.

In the last 20 years or so, live service games have become a large part of the industry, and a big part of many people’s lives. From the titans like World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Fortnite, to the mobile giants like Clash of Clans or Genshin Impact. The space is huge and if you can succeed, your game will do wonders.

But one big drawback for me as a player, is that it’s very difficult to go back to those games once you put them down. A lot of what kept you there isn’t true any more, or has changed so much it’s difficult to go back. For example, WoW was a massive part of my life from 2005 to 2011, where I was raid leader/mount collector/achievement point person. Once I put it down though, each time I tried to go back, I felt like a shell of my former glory which made it hard to reconnect.

TFT is a live service game as well, but I think one thing we try to keep on our mind is that each new set is a great chance to come back. Yes stuff changes, but it’s changed for everyone, and people are on the same footing. The core game doesn’t change too often, and so even if you haven’t played for 2, 3 or even more sets, you can jump right back in and enjoy the game for as long as you’d like.

As we plan more longer term projects like future sets and REDACTED, this is something we consider a lot. Making sure anyone can jump back in and have a good time at any point. And it’s that direction that gives me a lot of hope for TFT being around for a long time. As we approach 5 years, which is wild, I think continuing down that patch will be key.

If you’re reading this, and someone who has taken a break for a set or more then come back, I’d love to hear things that made you feel welcome to do so! And if you’re someone who stopped playing but has been reluctant to come back, I’d love to hear what’s stopping you.

Have a good Tuesday everyone. Find a way to enjoy some nachos this week. It will make you smile, I promise. Otherwise, have fun and take it easy 🙂
