Over time, as we add more systems and mechanics to TFT, there’s the obvious concern of the game ending up too complex and not approachable. Because of that, it’s important for us to evaluate the systems we have and make sure they are as simple and elegant as possible.

A good example of where this was done successfully was when we changed the items to pop off units on the carousel. For those who don’t know, that item used to be stuck on that champ and could even combine if you already had a component on a copy of that champ. In the beginning this system was there for depth and decision making, but it was clear that it wasn’t accomplishing that, so making the system simpler was the correct call. It was an almost universally loved change, and the game was better for it.

We’re continuing to look for opportunities like this to try to make TFT easier to understand at every level. In Patch 14.8, we’re going to be changing player damage because it’s time for that system to be less confusing!

Currently there is a base stage damage, and then for the first three surviving enemies you take 2 damage each, and then it drops to 1. Even people who play thousands of games often forget the exact numbers. Next patch, each surviving enemy will do 1 damage. Period. Much simpler to calculate. So if it’s Stage 3 (Base damage will be 5) and the enemy has 3 surviving champs, you’ll know you take 8 damage. We’ll also find a place to put the base damage numbers in the game later so you’ll be able to check on this. Should help keep the system simpler.

We’ll be looking out for more places to make improvements like this in the future as well, with the goal of keeping TFT deep and exciting to play, but also approachable and elegantly designed. One other system change coming next patch is that 2 streaks will be back! Getting that +1g for winning or losing two in a row feels good, and it will be nice to see it back.

Ok, time for breakfast and then finalizing the 14.8 patch changes. Let’s see what adjustments we need to make. Who knows…maybe Everything must go :|…

Until next time, take it easy 🙂
