When High Elo players try to claim that parts of TFT are “For Fun” and they don’t like them…they’re just trying to look tough. Don’t believe their lies!!
I’ve posted Portal popularity before, but it was always a general player base numbers. Thanks to our insights team though, we dug even deeper and broke it down by elos and modes, which gave us definitive proof that high elo players are just like everyone else, and enjoy fun.
First, let’s take a look at the top portals in a few categories. Remember, this is what percent of players stand in the portal given the chance:
Normal Games:
Scuttle Puddle: 69.5%
Crab Rave: 68.6%
Triple Prismatic: 59.8%
Multi-Talented: 55.8%
Loot Subscription: 54.3%
(Wandering Trainer: 46.1%)
Ranked Games (Bottom 99% of players):
Scuttle Puddle: 75.7%
Crab Rave: 74.4%
Triple Prismatic: 64.3%
Loot Subscription: 57.1%
Multi-Talented: 56.8%
(Wandering Trainer: 48.2%)
Generally consistent Top 5, and a lot of what we’d expect. Now let’s take a loot at those hard core players at high elo in their ranked games who supposedly hate fun.
Ranked Games (Top 1% of players):
Scuttle Puddle: 70.8%
Crab Rave: 66.2%
Wandering Trainer: 58.1% (!!!!)
Loot Subscription: 57.3%
Triple Prismatic: 55.6%
Yes, that’s right. The Wandering Trainer portal that we added to be the most “For Fun” is most popular with our top 1% of players in their ranked games, and is the third most picked portal. What’s up with that high elo players? Huh????
Ok but in all seriousness, the reality is that games, even at the highest levels of play, are still meant to be fun. In fact some of our most dedicated players who play 500-2000 games per set are the ones you may need to save from themselves, and offer a bit of unique variety they can opt into to spice up their experience. Sometimes players may say one thing, but actually need another. Finding ways to help give them that variety so they can continue to find enjoyment in the game they dedicate so much to is important!
If you’re curious of other takeaways, here’s some of the biggest difference portals. First number is Ranked 99%, second number is High Elo.
Artifact Anvil: 39.2% vs 51.8%
Spatula: 49.5% vs 27.4%
Completed Anvil: 30.1% vs 44.8%
Duplicator: 20.1% vs 14.9%
There are for sure differences in the needs of each of these player segments, and breaking down those differences will help you understand them and find design solutions for each. Just be careful you don’t always take their words at face value, you might miss out on something very fun that serves both audiences.
Have a great week everyone, and remember to take it easy 🙂
