One of the best part about working on the TFT team is how the team culture is, and a lot of that stemmed from how we embraced memes.
Early on, the TFT team decide the game was meant to be more light hearted than core League of Legends and that we wouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. Everything from how we designed the game to our internal team presentations took a much more silly and fun approach than any team I’d been on before. This was a massive success and led to the team generally being a healthier group.
It also directly led to player value. The team was given the freedom to just do silly things for the meme, because it would delight players. Over the years, whenever we get a chance without interfering with our core work, we try to add little delighters into the game. Some of my favorites over the years include:
Set 1 – Pirate chest having a 1% chance to give you a fish bones.
Set 4 – Fortune 6 giving you a boot you could wear on your head. https://youtu.be/Hr8-4daPwY8?si=qg7vw7pWwfRnlPSG&t=2031
Set 4 – Yasuo flashes Mastery 7 emote if he’s the last standing and killed 5 units. https://youtube.com/shorts/WidWklGCjUQ?si=G6_FAuM-qhmiFH2j
Set 5 – If you bought a Teemo for HP and it killed you, everyone in the lobby hears Teemo laugh.
Set 7 – 1000 Stack Lagoon giving you tons of junk and making your tactician HUGE. https://youtu.be/zcaapXAlOac?si=UAeE_L8bzfEZLpDR&t=716
These are just a few examples, but a team that has the freedom to add stuff for fun is a team that gets to find joy in their work, and it leads to players having delightful surprises to find. TFT is at its best when players run into unique situations or surprises each game, and we’ll continue to add these treats in every set and update. Let us know if you have any favorites I didn’t list here. Keep an eye out for these in the future, and until the next easter egg, take it easy 🙂
